“I have to say that I was a little surprised by the penalty that the stewards gave me at the end of the race. I absolutely don't want to make any mistakes at this speed. When they give this type of penalty it almost seems like they want to explain to us how to drive and take the corners." Fernando doesn't mince words Alonso in commenting on the penalty imposed by the stewards at the end of the Australian GP. The Spanish driver, in fact, was penalized by 20 seconds for having 'braked early' at turn 6. An element which, according to the stewards, was decisive for the Russell accident, which was behind him. “I believe that without the gravel – said the Spaniard – in that curve, that episode for which I was penalized would never have ended up under investigation”.
Alonso returns to talk about the penalty at the Australian GP: "I can boast 20 years in F1: I know how to do it"
Alonso received a penalty which undoubtedly compromised his Australian GP. Having crossed the finish line in sixth place, the two-time world champion was relegated all the way down in eighth place. But it's not so much the sporting result that angers him, but rather the dynamics of the action taken deemed irregular by the FIA. “I can boast about 20 years of experience in the manufacturing sector Formula 1. Changing trajectory, sacrificing speed on the entry curve to have a better one on the exit, are all tricks of this sport and which are cultivated thanks to experience. We never drive at 100% on every race lap and every corner. There are moments of saving between fuel and brakes and for this we must be responsible."
Head to Japan
Despite a not entirely the best ending, Aston Martin can now and must focus on the next round of the season. In Encouraging signs have arrived in Australia in the race by both Alonso and Stroll who, having crossed the finish line right behind his teammate, finished the GP in sixth place in the standings. “Now, however, despite not agreeing, we must accept the penalty and think about Japan. The objective – said Alonso – is to try to gain more points and reach even higher positions in the standings”.
