On the eve of the Miami GP, all eyes are focused more on what happens off the track than on the actual action. Two days ago, in fact, Adrian Newey has announced his farewell to Red Bull and rumors about his future they went wild. There are those who see him retiring, those in Ferrari and those in Aston Martin. This last option certainly wouldn't displease anyone Fernando Alonso, linked to the Silverstone team until 2026.
Alonso: “Newey is the best”
"I always wanted to work with him, at least once in a lifetime – explains the Asturian driver to the Spanish newspaper As - I respect him a lot and I consider him probably the best there has ever been in F1, a legend of this sport. I was lucky to have had him as a rival, I always raced against his cars. I'll have the Aston Martin Valkyrie [designed by him, ed.] in my garage and it will be a little gift to have one of his cars".
There have already been opportunities to work together, but they passed away for a short while. When Alonso arrived at McLaren for the first time, at the end of 2006, Newey had left less than a year before to join Red Bull. "I came close a couple of times, we even talked to each other. In these meetings there were not only Christian Horner and Helmut Marko, but also him. I have always shown him my respect and he did the same to me. We'll see what happens in the future.".
Despite his sympathy for Newey, Alonso did not go into detail about a possible negotiation between the engineer and Aston Martin. “This is a Lawrence issue and we are very satisfied with our technical department. Adrian is the best, but the decision is up to Lawrence and Adrian. But it's not the individual desire of a person that will move him, we don't even know if he wants to leave F1 or if he has other goals.".
