“Valtteri, it's James”: Vowles behind the Mercedes choices

His radio calls are famous.“Valtteri, it's James” , is one of the most iconic phrases spoken by Vowles himself. In 2018, the most striking, in Sochi, in which he gave Bottas the order to switch positions with Hamilton, effectively taking away from the Finn the taste for what would have been his first, and also only, success of the season. The most recent call instead comes during the 2021 Dutch Grand Prix, in which the Finn is asked to abort the fast lap attempt. Bottas lifted his foot but still set the best time, forcing Hamilton to return to the pits for a tire change on the penultimate lap. On the occasions of exchanging positions, the voice over the radio was precisely that of Vowles.
