Not even the time to reflect and analyze what happened a Silverstone, that Formula One get back on track again. All in Austria, at the Red Bull Ring for the eleventh round of the season. New track and new choices by Pirelli that, unlike Silverstone, change page by choosing the softest tyres of their range. Let's see everything in detail.
THE TIRES ON THE TRACK
- The Red Bull Ring in Austria looks like a short and fast roller coaster with just ten bends and constant ups and downs. Pirelli tackles it with the three softest tires in the range: C3 like P Zero White hard, C4 like P Zero Yellow medium and C5 like P Zero Red soft.
- Last year there were two consecutive races at the Red Bull Ring. This weekend there is the same tire nomination as in the second 2021 race, a choice aimed at increasing the spectacle of the fastest sport in the world: more degradation and more overtaking opportunities. On that occasion, the winning strategy was two stops: an opening stint on the medium, followed by two stints on the hard tyres. Of course, the compounds and structures are different this year.
- Austria is also hosting the second sprint format weekend of the season, after the first course at Imola. As per the regulation, instead of having 13 sets of tires as happens on a normal weekend, the riders will have 12, divided as follows: two hard, four medium and six soft. In addition, the teams will have up to six sets of Cinturato Green intermediate and three sets of Cinturato Blue full wet available in case of rain, which is always possible in the Styrian hills.
- Alpine, McLaren, Red Bull and Williams will also stop after the Austrian Grand Prix as part of the Pirelli test program for next year's tire development. McLaren and Williams will test for two days, while the other two teams will alternate for one day each.
Isola: "It will be a race full of entertainment"
There was, of course, no shortage words by Mario Isola:
“The asphalt of the Red Bull Ring offers a rather low grip in a low severity circuit, allowing us to bring the softest tires in the range. This is for the benefit of the show, in a location which in the past has often given exciting races thanks to a very compact and fast lap which features a series of very short bends. Traction and above all braking are essential here, with the risk of blocking especially in some difficult points when braking downhill. Maintaining rear tire performance throughout the lap is also key to ensuring adequate traction. Our compound nomination makes different strategies possible.”
