Mick Schumacher's adventure in Formula 1 as an official driver did not last long. In 2022 the German had to say goodbye to Haas after scoring the first championship points of his career. Mick was then welcomed by Mercedes, who hired him as third driver, mainly to work on the simulator. Despite efforts there is a lack of available seats – all that is missing is the renewal of Sergeant in Williams and we will have the full lineups – will force him to give up the Formula 1 also for 2024. So the time has come for Mick to look around for new opportunities to stay in business. The solution may lie in the WEC. The current Team Principal of Alpine, Bruno Famin confirmed last weekend at Suzuka that he was in contact with Mick Schumacher for a potential deal that would see the 24-year-old, currently Mercedes' third driver, race the new Alpine hypercar in the WEC and at Le Mans. But what stage are the talks at?
Schumacher-Alpine for the WEC, agreement concluded?
Rumors were circulating in the Japanese GP paddock that an agreement had already been reached. However, both Schumacher and Alpine have denied the official news, clarifying that only talks are taking place at the moment. When could the official announcement arrive? “It will probably be some time before then - Schumacher clarifies. But of course I have to consider my options and obviously there are discussions."
Bruno Famin also confirms this version:“For the moment we are just talking and hope to organize a test soon."
The Formula 1 hypothesis still remains an option even if the rumors speak of a firm "no" received for the second seat in Williams. In fact, there are several pilots waiting for the official announcement renewal for Sargeant currently in the balance given the latest disappointing performances. As Williams Team Principal James Volwes says “Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport, it's fierce competition, it's a meritocracy. You have to earn your place there.” If Sargeant does not get closer and reduce the gap with Albon, Williams could choose between several young drivers left out, such as Lawson currently on the track in place of Ricciardo who underwent wrist surgery after the accident in Holland. Or even Felipe Drugovich, Aston Martin reserve driver, one of the most popular names for Sargeant's replacement, especially given the help of substantial sponsorship.
