There's no good news from Race Direction. In fact, in recent days, the two race directors, Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas, tested positive for Covid-19. An announcement that worries Formula One, in particular Race Direction, in view of Miami where there is the risk of having no race director present on the track.
The FIA runs for cover
There is obviously time to get negative, but also the possibility that in Miami, over the weekend scheduled for 6 to 8 May, the two race officials will still be positive. This topic was already dealt with on Tuesday, in London during the F1 Commission, and the first operations are already starting to be studied.
VAR Opportunities
In fact, the possibility is not excluded that the tender management operates, in large part, remotely. Wittich could be tasked with the opportunity to work in Geneva, from Formula One's new 'VAR' room. The Virtual Race Control Room is a "new entry" for the 2022 season and has obviously been used for four races to avoid repeating a situation similar to Abu Dhabi 2021, in which Verstappen became world champion with many dubious events and mistakes committed by former race director Michael Masi. Should this decision be confirmed, then it will be up to Permanent senior adviser Herbie Blash and event assistant race director Colin Haywood to be present on a permanent basis at the circuit.
No chance for Masi
Another idea would be to rely on Scott Elkins, race director of Formula E. However, the rumors of a possible return by Michael Masi, who could also say goodbye to the International Federation soon, are not confirmed.
