La F1 Commissions reunited at London last 26 April unanimously approved an experiment for the 2023, with a novelty for qualifying concerning the allocation and use of the new tires during the race weekends Pirelli, which some teams have recently started testing for next season. The revised format of qualifying will see all teams enter the Q1 with tires hard, in Q2 with the medium and in Q3 with the soft.
What's new in 2023 will not be made at every race weekend but will only be tested on 2 occasions, in order to evaluate the effective validity of this new system which, if everything goes according to plan, will be introduced starting from 2024. The novelty that will impact the qualification format comes from the idea of reduce the number of compounds available to each team from 13 to 11. A decision resulting from the "ecological" drive of Liberty Medium. The reduction in the number of tires will concern the softer ones, the soft, used more.
Reduction of the use of tyres
The Commission has unanimously agreed to trial a reduction in tire allocation from 13 sets to 11 at two events in the 2023 season. This will be done to assess the impact of the reduced tire allocation on track racing, with l general intention to switch to more sustainable use of tires in the future. (FIA Statement)
In 2022 la Formula 1 has already introduced a novelty compared to previous years, concerning the obligation of compounds. In fact, compared to last year, all the teams can decide which compound to start on the starting grid with, without the obligation for the first 10 in qualifying to use the same compound in the race.
As for the decision on the new format proposed by the management to reduce the number of sets of tires, it had not been welcomed with great enthusiasm by the teams, but in the end all 10 agreed to test the new format over two weekends during the season 2023.
