Ferrari does not stop. He works and, despite the Christmas period, the only goal in Maranello is to try to avoid the problems seen in the year that has now ended. A goal that is now getting closer and closer to achieving it. In fact, the reliability problems of the battery would seem to have finally been resolved power units 066/7 used last year by the Maranello team on the Ferrari F-75. Since March 2022, its designer Wolf Zimmermann has wanted to extract the full potential of this power unit, but not the thirty extra horses that have been said, but fifteen. Those fifteen horses that have died because of the problems encountered by the young man engine 1.
The biggest problem: reliability
But why is this estimate realistic? To understand this, we need to retrace the context in which last year's engine was designed. This power units was homologated respecting the parameters of the FIA which required the engine freezing until the end of 2025. At this juncture, the red would seem to have recovered the gap di horses missing during the unfortunate two-year period 2020-2021 thanks to the engine known as "Superfast", exempt from the freezing imposed by the FIA.
Mattia Binotto, the former team principal of Ferrari, therefore decided to homologate the 066/7 in his stronger versionwhile aware of its limitations. Future resarches which did not allow it to reach the target of seven Grands Prix, again with a view to a limitation present in the regulation, i.e. the maximum number of use of 3 power units in a season without penalties. Therefore, the choice of Binotto had been dictated by the fact that it would still have been possible to continue develop the fragile parts that they yielded.
Fifteen… the long-awaited number
So, at the start of last season's championship, engine 1 was configured by Ferrari with less extreme mappings. It was preferred to leave it on test bed about fifteen horses compared to the real potential that the staff led by Enrico Gualtieri had been able to achieve. Given the many vicissitudes of the season, the engineers of the Maranello team opted for reduce the output of the power unit by fifteen horsepower. This is how the performance delta between the optimal condition and the effective power used rose to around thirty horsepower, hence the data that was "erroneously" circulated. Indeed, for the GP of Abu Dhabi at the end of the season, some interventions were carried out with the aim of looking for the duration of the engine and lo and behold 066/7 is got back to "roar" like at the beginning of the season during the Bahrain GP.
Ferrari, the goal is clear
This recovery was possible by working on the pre-chamber. Component that includes the fuel injector, a free and unfrozen part for the regulation, which allowed the recovery of the fifteen horses removed. In 2022, the Scuderia di Maranello therefore worked hard in view of 2023 to recover those fifteen horses discarded at the beginning of 2022. The Rossa is succeededita to turn off some cells for duration tests. Considering that from 2023 the budget cap will also concern the engines that have enabled this development, these cells have been shut down with the serenity of having achieved a very coveted goal (and suffered).
