La Formula One does not intend to stop and get right back on track Dutch Grand Prix. We fly to Zandvoort, a completely different runway from Belgium, as well as mixes them selected by Pirelli.
THE TIRES ON THE TRACK CHOSEN BY PIRELLI
- The three hardest compounds were selected for Zandvoort. C1 as P Zero White hard, C2 as P Zero Yellow medium and C3 as P Zero Red soft.
- This year the gap between C1 and C2 is bigger. Another reason why the teams could prefer the two softer compounds this weekend.
- Banking on turns 3 and 14 is about 18 degrees. For comparison, the historic Parabolica on the old Monza track has an average banking of around 30 degrees. Compared to other modern racetracks: Indianapolis has 9-degree banking and Jeddah 12.
- Zandvoort subjects high g-forces throughout the 4,2 kilometer loop. Braking to enter turn 1 and turn 11 generates a deceleration of around 5g, while turn 7 subjects you to lateral acceleration of around 5g.
- As the name suggests, Zandvoort can be prone to sand depositing on the tarmac. The location of the circuit close to the coast also causes frequent changes in wind direction.
Isola assures: "We will have more overtaking"
To present the weekend, there was no shortage of declarations from the head of the Motorsport technical area of Pirelli, Mario isola:
“Zandvoort proved to be a spectacular addition to last year's calendar. The most demanding areas for the tires are turns 3 and 14, both with banking, which are traveled at high speeds and subject the cars to a combination of forces: downforce together with lateral accelerations. This, plus the additional challenges posed by the layout of the circuit, is why we selected the three hardest compounds in the range. It is only the fourth time this year that we have made this nomination, after the GPs in Bahrain, Spain and Great Britain. The new car-tyre package introduced this year should facilitate overtaking on a track where last season it was difficult to overtake: in fact, most of the drivers only made one stop to avoid losing their position, but it is possible that this time they will aim for more on the softer compounds: in this case we could see more two-stop strategies and the riders could push even harder”.
