La Red Bull has already brought home his two objectives for 2022: the constructors' title, after a fast that had lasted since 2014, and the drivers' title, won for the second year in a row by Max Verstappen. Without a World Cup to defend Sergio Perez has a free way to fight for victory in the home Grand Prix, in Mexico. A Grand Prix that already last year showed us the extent of the spectacularity it can offer to the drivers who challenge each other in the arena. On that occasion Perez finished third, but with a lot of pride, leading an entire nation there. History has never given Mexican fans a win by a compatriot in F1. Perez will try to break this chain.
Perez will also have other opportunities
Should the Mexican fail to get there, he will have 3 more attempts to try, actually 2 considering that he has signed until 2024 with Red Bull. Just today the confirmation of the renewal of the Mexico City Grand Prix until 2025. Next year he will be part of a super hat-trick also made up of Austin and Brazil. Formula 1 is increasingly attracting the interest of cities and promoters to bring the category to every territory. Mexico, which returned in 2015 after a 23-year absence, intends to continue this partnership with engines and there is no greater reason to be proud of doing so with a driver who has just brought home a constructors' title.
“The fans are amazing here, they give me everything they have in the stands and it's great to see them. Everywhere I go in the world I see Mexican flags, but what I can experience in Austin and here is truly irreplaceable. Formula 1 will continue to compete in Mexico City until 2026, it's something great for our country. We can demonstrate how beautiful the Mexican people and territory are, Formula 1 offers this exposure all over the world. I am extremely proud of my country for this. I've already dreamed a few times of taking the victory home, that's obviously the goal on Sunday. " Perez said at the press conference in Mexico City.
“We will have to be perfect”
Perez has had some ups and downs over the course of the season. However, the last victory is very recent, it dates back to the GP of Singapore and comes after a string of bad performances. The Mexican has always taken those 5-6 tenths of wages from his partner, suffering even more than him from the updates and attitudes of the RB18.
“It will not be easy, we will have to be perfect all weekend long. We will be focused on the race to give our best. I know it's a weekend like any other and we're racing for the same number of points, but for me it's much more special" Perez concluded.
