Three weeks have already passed since the last race of the season and, after the marks assigned to the riders, it's the teams' turn. Here are our report cards for the 10 teams on the grid in 2022.
Williams: 5
Un step back compared to 2021 and the marks are necessarily negative: 8 points against 23, even if it must be specified that last year as many as 10 arrived in the non-competition at Spa. Albon, then, is not Russell, even if his year was positive and proved to be worth more than the car had available. A return to the last position, therefore, after the eighth place of last season.
Alpha tauri: 4.5
Despite having scored many more points than Williams (35 to 8), the team from Faenza is one of the disappointments of 2022. In 2021, with 142 points, he went well beyond expectations and finished in sixth place in the constructors, with Gasly constantly in the upper areas of the top 10. This year he and Tsunoda they have often finished well behind the top 10, even without accidents or mechanical breakdowns.
Haas: 6.5
After closing 2021 without points, the US stable he displaced everyone in the first part of this season. The returning Magnussen often found himself in the top 10 and, after the initial races, Mick Schumacher also started to score some points. The problem, however, was the second part of the season: 3 points in 11 races they pushed the team back a lot.
Aston Martin: 6.5
A season almost diametrically opposite to that of Haas despite the votes being equal: a slow start and a crescendo ending. The first part was total suffering, with disastrous qualifying and races that only aimed to patch up Saturday's debacle. In the second half, however, the car improved and both Vettel and Stroll found themselves battling in the upper areas of the midfield. It all seemed worse than in 2021, but in the end the results are very similar.
Alfa Romeo: 7
One of the good surprises of this 2022, even if thereliability prevented the Italian-Swiss team from fighting for even more noble placements. Their season is in many respects similar to Haas', with 51 points in the first 9 rounds and just 4 in the remaining 13. The pilots did not disappoint: Bottas lived up to his role as team boss and Zhou made a successful debut. If they manage to improve reliability, Sauber will be able to take away a lot of satisfaction.
The votes of the top 5
McLaren: 7
Identical ratings for McLaren and Alfa Romeo but very different situations. After narrowly losing the challenge for third place with Ferrari in 2021, the Woking-based company had to settle for fifth place in the season that has just ended. 159 points against 275, a podium finish of five. Without Norris to maximize the result then every Sunday the situation could have been definitely worse. Ricciardo, in fact, did not guarantee the team the continuity of results that would have served to snatch fourth place from Alpine in the constructors' classification.
Alpine: 7.5
Two podiums and one win less than 2021, but a big step forward in terms of continuity and performance. Last year the transalpine team maximized the only two truly positive weekends of the season, while this year it has always been the fourth force in the field, sometimes even taking away points from Mercedes. The journey was devoid of top moments but he didn't even have flop races. The only two regrets are the bad luck Alonso had and the compromised relationship between him and Ocon. In any case, iFourth place is the best Alpine could have achieved: despite a difficult year, Mercedes is still Mercedes.
Podium votes
Mercedes: 7.5
The first year since 2013 that does not end with a victory in the constructors. Hamilton's first year without a pole and a win. But also the pleasant discovery of Russell and a growing season finale that allowed us to fight with Ferrari to the end. Porpoising held back the Silver Arrows in the first part of the season, while from Spa onwards, competitiveness has grown noticeably. If the W14 is faster than the W13, with two drivers like Russell and Hamilton, Mercedes can once again be as scary as ever.
Ferrari: 8
If we stop at a superficial analysis, based exclusively on the comparison with 2021, the year was a success in all respects: 12 pole positions (equaling the record of the Schumacher era), 4 victories and the title of runner-up in both rankings. Digging a little deeper, however, it turns out that the victories could have been many more and the first four letters could have been removed from the word “vice-champion”. I wonder if, after Domenicali, Mattiacci, Arrivabene and Binotto, Vasseur he will prove to be the right man to bring the Reds back to the top of the world.
Red Bull: 9.5
The best season ever for the bibitari, who managed to recover from the initial disaster (3 cars withdrawn in the first 3 races) and took home both titles well in advance. Verstappen was simply phenomenal, Perez made the best of him. Hoping that in 2023 relations between the Dutch and the Mexican will not worsen.
