Now it's official: the Volkswagen group will enter Formula 1 in 2026 with two famous brands! However, this does not mean that the grid will expand to 12 teams. We could see 11 at the start or the number could remain unchanged. In fact, while Porsche already has very clear ideas, Audi has yet to plan its moves and Alfa Romeo could pay the price.
The agreement of supply of engines between Red Bull and Porsche it had been clear for months and will be made official shortly. Audi, on the other hand, is deciding whether to enter the Circus as eleventh team or take over Sauber, which recently renewed its partnership with Alfa Romeo for next season but is undecided about what to do for future years.
The options for the Swiss team, therefore, are two: say no to Audi and continue with Alfa Romeo or accept the proposal of the house of the four circles. If so, Formula 1 would say goodbye to an Italian excellence which it is Alfa Romeo following his return in 2018.
Speaking of goodbyes. Honda will leave definitively Red Bull and Formula 1 at the end of the 2025, the last year of the power units with MGU-H. The second electric motor connected to the turbocharger, in fact, will be repealed starting from 2026, and the power of the MGU-K will be tripled in order to leave the performance of the engines unchanged.
