The news that everyone was expecting, as noted in these days, it finally became official. The FIA has indeed the regulation for Power Units was approved which will come into force from 2026.
Engines 2026, here are the news
After months of negotiations, and also tensions, the FIA finally managed to find the right agreement between the parties to allow the drafting of the new regulation. But what will be the most important news? Through our press release from the Federation, we read that the 2026 Power Units will have similar performance to the current ones, confirming the use of V6 internal combustion engines. The objective is to ensure better driveability and to pay particular attention to the environment. The new Power Units in fact they will use 50% more electricity than currently, using an entirely sustainable fuel.
Porsche and Audi are preparing
Confirmed instead, also for an economic question, the removal of MGU-H, with increased strength given to the MGU-K which will develop three times more power than it currently has. The new rules will therefore undoubtedly allow for reductions the overall costs of the engines, thus giving greater opportunity for new teams to enter F1, as in the case of Porsche and Audi. Following this officiality, in fact, it is now really missing shortly before the entry of the two brands of the Volkswagen group in the Circus. We already know the way in which Porsche will debut in F1, that is, as an engine supplier to Red Bull; However, it is yet to be understood how Audi will enter.
Ben Sulayem speaks
A great result was achieved, as stated by the president of FIA I'm Sulayem:
“The FIA continues to push innovation and sustainability. The 1 Formula 2026 Power Unit Regulations are a clear example of this. The introduction of Power Units capable of using synthetic fuels is in line with our objective. The idea is to develop technologies capable of eliminating carbon emissions in 2030. I would therefore like to thank all the managers and staff of the FIA for this great step forward."
