After the events in Abu Dhabi la FIA he used the former race director as a 'sacrificial lamb' Michael Massi, in order to break free from the heavy pressures of Mercedes. Today, however, despite the fact that the final stage of last season still burns those who have suffered the negative consequences, the name of the former Australian director is once again the subject of discussion regarding his possible return in the top flight.
The origins
Michael Masi made his debut in early 2019, taking over from the historic race director Charlie whitingsadly passed away. The first two seasons were quite manageable for Masi as he didn't find himself having to settle particular issues; but as soon as the dominance of Mercedes was challenged by Red Bull, things for the Australian they weren't easy. Masi found himself having to manage one political struggle that poured onto the track from the paddock; as well as having to decide on incidents that are difficult to interpret. The race director sort of 'broke under pressure' towards the end of the season, causing scandals like the negotiations before the restart in Jeddah, and the fatal mistake in the last laps of Abu Dhabi.
The possible return
The newly elected president of the FIA I'm Sulayem has let the media know that, in the future, he would like one trident formation as for the referees. There are currently two of them playing the delicate role: Niels Wittich e Eduardo Freitas; Sulayem considers Masi to be the most suitable candidate. It's good to consider that you don't invent Formula 1 race directors overnight, but to guarantee justice on the asphalt you need many years of experience; having said that, it is undeniable that Michael Masi is suitable to wear the clothes of director, considering that to date personalities capable of holding this position, in the world of motorsport, can probably be counted on the fingers of one hand.
Sulayem-Masi chat
FIA President Ben Sulayem said in an interview that he recently spoke with Michael Masi: “I had a chat with Michael two days ago. I have no personal problems with him or with anyone else. I never said we were going to get rid of him. Masi is part of the e we could integrate it again.
Our organization chart, from an organizational point of view, it had some flaws. And although we currently have two race directors, we are not yet to the point that we expected. It's not like going to the supermarket, you need firm, fair and flexible people. We need to put our hands on the organization of personnel and, in 2023, I would like to have three referees".

Who sent Masi away?
Sulayem then announced the drastic decision to exclude Masi it was not taken from him, but by the FIA world council: “Michael, in addition to being Race Director was also security officer. We can say it was overloaded with tasks. He made a mistake but I want to clarify that the decision to relieve him of his role it wasn't mine. It was submitted by FIA World Council".
