Mercedes still can't find the square on the W13. Even the weekend in Miami cannot be considered positive for the Silver Arrows, who are hoping for a rebirth in Barcelona
Totally stalled. Mercedes' season hasn't started in the best way so far. So many problems on the W13 they did not allow George Russell, and especially to Lewis Hamilton, to be able to fight for the positions that count. Now the German stable is faced with a crossroads named Barcelona.
An uphill start
It is evident that Mercedes is in trouble. The stable, with the seven-times world champion in his team, hasn't yet found the right balance on his team new W13. The main problem is undoubtedly related to the famous jumps, better defined as pouring. The various updates, brought to the various GPs, did not give the answers we were looking for. An example can be the bottom selected for Hamilton in Australia, eventually scrapped. The seven-time world champion is the pilot who gave the statements a clear enough idea of the situation: “We are slow“. Without forgetting his statements during the Imola GP: “The light at the end of the tunnel? There is not".
The False Hope Called Miami
Clearly not an easy situation, but at Mercedes there was a lot of hope for Miami. The various updates and Friday free practice, in which Russell finished first in FP2, they seemed to have brought back to life to the silver arrows. In reality, that was not the case. On Saturday and Sunday, perhaps more than a Mercedes decline, there was a return from the other teams, who had been in hiding until Friday. Also in this case therefore, Miami can only be defined as another chance for recovery failure for Mercedes.
Barcelona and Wolff's hopes
After the first five failed races, Mercedes has the last chance called Barcelona. In Montmelò it will be understood whether the W13 project can be improved, or at all to delete. On this aspect Toto Wolff ci believes and, in view of Barcelona, he declared:
"We will look at all the data we have obtained and try to find out why we had really good sessions on Friday, we had a fast lap and we will analyze why we are not at the top right now.”.
Wolff: "The car is fast"
The W13 project cannot therefore be considered wrong yet, at least according to the team principal: “There is potential in the car and it is fast. But we fail to figure out how to unlock the potential. It's probably a super difficult car to drive, borderline, in and out of the performance window. We've never had this situation in any of the years, where it just didn't correlate at all with what we see on our screens, with what the driver feels and that makes it more difficult."
