The statements of the head of Mercedes engineers in view of the next stage in Miami: “We still have many problems, but there will be updates”
It's not an easy start to the season for the Mercedes. The Brackley team, reigning constructor champion, is certainly not getting excellent results. The W13 still does not give certainties to the driver duo composed of George Russell and the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. THE there are still many problems: the car in fact seems to be poorly balanced and full of understeer, without forgetting the phenomenon of pouring always present and visible.
Word to Shovlin
"The light at the end of the tunnel? It's not there right now…” – he declared Hamilton during the Imola weekend, in which he finished only in thirteenth place, therefore outside the points zone. In Brackley, however, they are at work trying to find that light, which could mean salvation. Andrew Shovlin , head of the Mercedes engineers, does not hide the difficulties of the German team but believes that the return of the silver arrow is ever closer: “We know where we are at the moment Shovlin said – we know the gap we have to close to get where we want to be, but as a team we are very focused on the engineering challenge we are facing and it is also very interesting.
Turnaround time
The goal is to try to eliminate the problems present on the W13, even if it is not easy at all: “These are new problems for us. We must understand them, overcome them and we are putting a lot of energy into it. With each passing day we learn more and more and I honestly hope that new parts of the machine can arrive from Miami that can give us an indication of the direction taken. Whether it's the right one or not."
“We need to understand in which direction we are proceeding”
The watchword, however, must be patience. A component that, in Formula One, is difficult to possess, especially if your opponents push, and even a lot: “We don't expect to solve the problem overnight – honestly declares the British engineer – but it would be important to have indications that we are heading in the right direction. We hope we have reached the end to what we are going through. If so, then we would be quite satisfied, because it would mean that we have taken the right path. A lot of the work going on in Brackley is to understand the phenomenon and if we can actually control it, if we can find an aerodynamic solution to apply to the car and try to overcome this problem”.

Ready for updates
One of the biggest difficulties is related to porpoising. The jumping on the cars of Hamilton and Russell are increasingly evident and, precisely for this reason, news is planned for Miami:
“Now, being realistic, we think this is going to be something we tackle in stages, rather than one big moment, with a solution. But we are seeing encouraging signs. Like I said, we hope to bring some car parts soon, maybe even to Miami, where hopefully we can see progress on porpoising".
