Toto Wolff had announced it in recent months, but now the official announcement has arrived: Lewis Hamilton does not move from Mercedes and renews his contract until 2025. Two-year agreement for the seven-time world champion who, for the next two seasons, will continue to support George Russell forming a truly frightening driver duo. The announcement came just before the weekend of Italian Grand Prix, in Monza, definitively putting an end to the rumors that he was at Ferrari.
Wolff: The renewal was an easy decision
Hamilton, at 38, had now been in talks with team principal Toto Wolff for several months, discussions which ultimately led to new terms. Following the announcement, there was no shortage of the words of Toto Wolff: “Continuing with our current driver lineup was an easy decision. We have the strongest pairing on the grid and both drivers are playing a crucial role in the team to take us forward.
The strength and stability they provide will be critical to our future success. Our partnership with Lewis is one of the most successful in the history of the sport. The fact that we would continue together was always a formality – and it is inspiring for all of us to confirm this publicly. His qualities as a pure racing driver are illustrated by his extraordinary track record; but over the years we spent together, he grew to become a pillar and leader of our team."
After two difficult years, Mercedes definitely wants to change and return to its old and dear habits, that is, to fight for the world championship.
“These leadership qualities are crucial as we focus on fighting for the world championships. As F1's biggest global star, she has also played a key role in shaping our commitments to diversity, inclusion and sustainability, which will form the foundation of our success for years to come.
Hamilton renewal: "I will continue to fight"
Besides Wolff, there could not fail to be declarations too by Lewis Hamilton who commented on his renewal thus: "We dream every day of being the best and have dedicated the last ten years together to achieving this goal. Being at the top doesn't happen overnight or in a short period of time, it takes commitment, hard work and dedication and it has been an honor to go down in the history books with this incredible team. We have never been so hungry to win. We learned from every success but also from every setback. I am grateful to the team who supported me both on and off the track. Our story is not over, we are determined to achieve more together and we will not stop until we do."
Lewis Hamilton therefore does not stop, determined to win his eighth world title, which he narrowly missed out on in 2021.
Russell, his teammate, equally satisfied added: “I have grown with this team since I joined the junior program in 2017. It's my home and it's great to extend our special relationship through 2025."
