A track that Charles doesn't like, and that on paper suits Red Bull better but here too, after two sessions spent behind the 1-2 Red Bull Charles puts his very personal signature and takes Pole Position with a perfect lap. Unlucky Carlos Sainz, who slipped behind due to time canceled by the red flag, called into question by Fernando Alonso's accident in Q3, and then penalized by a car problem. Ferrari hasn't started from the post since 2007, the year in which Kimi Raikkonen started and finished ahead of everyone else.
Red Bull on fire
Red Bull dominated qualifying until the final push by Ferrari. You know, in qualifying with such competitive single-seaters it's a matter of thousandths. In Jeddah it was precisely because of these that Pole was lost, while in Melbourne the situation was reversed. Perez proved once again that he can also fight for Pole Position in qualifying. A thousandth, a single thousandth from Leclerc takes Pole away from him. Max will start again alongside the Monegasque, but he will have to be careful not to let him escape. Plus a crazy race, like today's qualifying could reshuffle the cards
Under investigation
Pérez will be investigated after the session for failing to slow at turn 11 under a yellow flag caused by Russell. Should he be confirmed he would face a penalty on the grid.
Alonso wall divides the Ferraris
Twist in Q3. 6 minutes from the checkered flag, Fernando Alonso's car crashed on the gravel and ended up in the wall due to a gearbox problem. It's a shame because the Spaniard was having some amazing qualifying. The accident somewhat upsets the hierarchies in the standings, Charles manages to take the provisional pole position by crossing the finish line just before the red flag is shown. Sainz, on the other hand more unfortunate, didn't cross the finish line for very little! The Spaniard from Maranello would have finished 43 thousandths ahead of the Monegasque for pole.
Canadian clash
An accident that seems absurd, except that the cause is always the same subjects, even if one in particular, the number 6 of Williams, Nicholas Latifi. With 2 minutes to go, Nicholas' car collides with that of Stroll, another Canadian but from Aston Martin, who has just come out of the pits after a long break to repair his crashed car in FP3. Both seem to be to blame, not even helped by their respective teams: Stroll didn't check the mirrors but because he didn't think he'd find Latifi la, Latifi initially wanted to leave the line to Stroll, but then decided to take space for the first lap. However, Stroll who had seen him around the bend earlier did not expect to find him next to him. A fatal misunderstanding, neither of them was launching, but both thought the opposite and then changed their minds. Williams and Aston Martin are the only two teams that have not scored a single point this season but they are the only ones who battle in such an extreme way even though they are aware that they cannot aspire to who knows what result. The result is consequences like this and like the other accidents that often involve these two teams. In this case, the trajectories of the two drivers ended up crossing each other in a carom in which Latifi's single-seater ended up in the wall, coming out once again in pieces. Damage that begins to have an important weight. However, this clash allowed Vettel to go out on track and attempt the assault on Q2. In fact, the team was finishing work on its car after the crash in FP3 and if it hadn't been for that red flag, it wouldn't even have been able to complete a lap. With only one attempt at his disposal he therefore qualified 18th.
Alpine and McLaren the real outsiders
McLaren can smile again, at least for now. Norris conquered an excellent 4th place, Ricciardo also did well, putting the McLaren in front of the two Alpines of Ocon and Alonso, unlucky in the final stages. Fernando told Sky at the end of the session that he could have aspired to pole if he hadn't had that gearbox problem.
