The American giant on the eve of the highly anticipated race weekend in Las Vegas has announced entry into Formula 1 from 2028 with a Cadillac hybrid engine. A commitment made above all on the basis of General Motors' partnership with Andretti and which is therefore necessarily linked to one condition: Andretti's entry into Formula 1 as the eleventh team. An entry that divided the paddock and which is still in doubt. There FIA in fact he accepted the candidacy of Andretti-Cadillac. However, there is still an obstacle to overcome in order to actually consider yourself inside, that is, obtaining the pass of the FOM, for commercial rights. Waiting to hear the response on Andretti, General Motors has placed another important piece with the official registration as an engine manufacturer, putting even more pressure on the F1 Circus which this weekend will stop at the home of the protagonists, in the "lion's cage".
General Motors engine manufacturer from 2028, there is the announcement
General Motors has officially announced its entry into Formula 1 as an engine manufacturer starting from 2028, with the intention of providing powertrains to the Andretti Cadillac team. This announcement comes ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix, highlighting the commitment of senior GM executives to supporting Andretti Global's bid. The new engine technical cycle which will see the light in 2026 has already seen six manufacturers, including Audi and Ford, engage with the FIA. General Motors will therefore be the number seven engine manufacturer and reiterated its exclusive support for Andretti, awaiting the team's official entry into F1.
“We are thrilled that the new Andretti Cadillac F1 will be powered by a General Motors power unit - he said Mark Reuss, the President of General Motors. With our deep engineering and racing experience, we are confident that we will develop a successful power unit and we will position Andretti Cadillac as a true factory team. We will race with the best, at the highest levels, with passion and integrity that will help elevate the sport for racing fans around the world.”
The collaboration with Andretti
Despite initial opposition from existing teams and the financial issues associated with the entry of a new team, the commitment of General Motors and Andretti Global represents an opportunity for renewal for F1, opening the doors to an all-American team with the support of a giant like General Motors.
Andretti, remember, is the only candidate who met all the criteria required by the FIA to expand the grid from 10 to 11 teams, and hopes to be able to take over as early as 2025. Obviously, arriving three years ahead of compatriots involved in the construction of the complex Power Units, it would have to turn to another manufacturer for the three-year period from 2025 to 2028.

The collaboration between General Motors and Andretti took shape in January, when the group agreed to supply engines under the Cadillac banner for Andretti's F1 entry project. Initially, the idea was for Andretti to use an engine from an existing manufacturer in collaboration with General Motors. However, F1 has raised criticism, claiming that General Motors would only act as a glorified sponsor with a Cadillac engine. However, General Motors' decision to build its own engine strengthened its commitment to entering Formula 1. The path to get to 2028 is long and expensive but prototype tests have already begun. We'll see if this additional pressure will convince F1 to give Andretti a chance.
