As expected in FP3 the rain arrived in Hungary, particularly stimulating for the Williams duo who, to everyone's surprise, placed the cars in P1 with Nicholas Latifi and in P3 with Alexander Albon. All with a gap of about 6 tenths from Charles Leclerc, in P2 with the same tyre, while his teammate is a little further away Carlos Sainz, and P7. We don't know the fuel loads but this is undoubtedly a really encouraging sign for Williams who would like to stop time and get to the qualifications straight away.
Wet qualifications or not?
A rain that will probably only accompany us until qualifying and then give us a break on Sunday, where a dry race is expected. The last free session was an anomalous session, different from the ones FP1 e FP2 of yesterday conditioned by the heat and the sun, and with little activity on the track, entirely dedicated to qualifying simulation. But conditions at the Hungaroring can change from one moment to the next, and the possibility of being faced with a dry qualifying cannot be ruled out. What is certain is that the teams will enter the track with the dry set-up. Which will make everything even more unpredictable!
La temperature difference and track conditions, compared to yesterday they obliged the teams to test as much as possible, even in somewhat prohibitive conditions, trying both the intermediate and the full wet. With the relative differences between those who would prefer a qualification from one or the other mixes. The first teams to hit the track were Ferrari, Alpine e McLaren, which had shown great strength in the dry. Very short session for the Red Bull instead, forced to make up for it from the pay that Ferrari gave him yesterday both in the race pace simulation and in the qualifying simulation. Max Verstappen he waited for conditions to improve before lapping, finishing in P4. Perez was disastrous as he ended FP3 in P20.
Mercedes in trouble
At the end of FP3, with truly extreme conditions and little grip, we saw a Mercedes in difficulty. One of the problems with the W13 is precisely that of getting the rear tires up to temperature. If the others complain about a lack of grip, Mercedes' situation is even more difficult, as well as dangerous. The intermediates don't go up to temperature and the weather conditions don't seem drastic enough to require full wets. Qualifying is fundamental from a race perspective given that the Hungaroring is not a track where you can overtake. But if Russell still manages to get into P5 in these FP3s Lewis Hamilton he feels the problem more, and his disappointing P11 proves it.
Compact group center
Lando Norris (P8), Fernando Alonso (P6) e Sebastian Vettel (P9) continue on yesterday's positive trend even if Vettel ends the session in a rather disappointing way, stamping his AMR22 on the barriers. The mechanics will have a lot to do to get the car back on track for qualifying. The fight for the top 10, also considering a Williams galvanized by the excellent result in FP3, is tight. It will be essential to get to the front to have fewer problems in the race, which in the dry could especially favor McLaren.
