Two weeks later and the F2 takes to the track again for the Free tests of the GP of Baku. Complex city circuit with temperatures around 27° and a uncertain weather. Not a wet practice session but one that generates uncertainty thanks to a few drops of rain and a poorly rubberized asphalt. A fundamental free practice session especially for the rookies Browning, Mini e mansell.
Lots of substitutions on the grid and few certainties
The category of the F2 arrives at the Baku weekend with many news:
- Among the most important news we have the farewell of the English ART Grand Prix driver, Zak O'SullivanLack of funds and sponsors lead the winner of the Monaco GP to give space to Luke browning, Williams Academy driver who until the last Monza race fought for the title. Following a crash on the third lap – and a penalty – he was unable to secure the championship title.
- With the passage of Bearman in the top category, Prema had to choose the F3 vice-champion Gabriele Mini, as his replacement this Sunday. First debut in F2 for the Palermo native who will take to the track for the first time alongside his compatriot Andrea Kimi Antonelli.
- Trident He also promoted Christian Mansell in F2, who will replace Roman Stanek for the remainder of the 2024 season for reasons not exactly specified. A new experience in an F2 car but not the first, remembering that he took part in the 2023 post-season tests with Trident at Yas Marina.
Red flags and difficulties characterize the Baku GP free practice
Gabriele Minì settles in well right away, who, at the start of the F2 Free Practice session, immediately set the 5th fastest time, lapping in 2:03.938. The current reference time was that of Victor Martins, who in these conditions immediately proved to be the fastest, lapping in 2:01.688, followed by Juan Manuel Correa at +0,3.
It will be then Enzo Fittipaldi to lead both the first and second part of F2. The first to go under the 2 minute barrier is the Brazilian driver first in 1:59.550, then improved and closed the session in 1st position by turning in 1:58.244.
Two red flags affected the tests. The first twenty minutes from the end caused by the Team Campos car and Josep Maria Martì, in turn 6, the second one instead to the recovery from Oliver Goethe at turn 15, bringing the Free Practice session to a premature end. Only one minute will be available for a few practice starts.
