James Vowles, Williams Team Principal, gave an exclusive interview to Motorsport.com, in which he painted a clear picture of the challenges the team is facing and the long-term vision to bring the British team back to the top of Formula 1, together with the new arrival, Carlos Sainz. Despite a difficult start to the 2024 season, with Williams currently relegated to ninth place in the constructors' standings, Vowles underlined that the current difficulties are part of a broader plan, destined to bear fruit only in the medium to long term.
James Vowles' vision for Williams is clear and ambitious: to bring the Grove team back to competing for victories and, possibly, world titles. However, the road is still long and tortuous. “It won't be a quick process,” Vowles admitted. “We still have many obstacles to overcome, and there will be difficult times. But I am convinced that we are making the right choices. "
James Vowles: “The future is Williams' priority”
Vowles explained that his strategy is based on a progressive approach, in which the present is seen as a necessary compromise to build a solid and competitive future. “When I took on the role of Team Principal, I knew we would face enormous challenges,” said Vowles. “There were rapid initial successes, but I was aware that these would not be enough. Our real goal is to get back to fighting for the top positions, and to do that we have to make some difficult choices now.”
One of the key aspects of Vowles' plan concerns the technical developments of the car. The 46 FW2024 received significant updates in three key areas: aerodynamics, suspension and weight reduction. However, Vowles clarified that these improvements are only part of a much larger development program, which already looks to 2025 and, above all, 2026, the year in which a new technical regulation will come into force that could reshuffle the cards on the table. “We're investing for the long term,” Vowles explained. “Our focus is not only on the current season, but also on future ones. For months, our wind tunnel has been busy developing the 2025 car, with the aim of being fully prepared for 2026.”
This strategy inevitably involves sacrifices. “We chose to make short-term compromises so we could focus on the future,” Vowles admitted. “This means that we will not see the results immediately, and we must be ready for difficult moments. However, I am convinced that this is the only way to get Williams back to competing at a high level.”
The Sainz effect for James Vowles: a valuable driver for a Williams strategy
An integral part of this revival plan for Williams and James Vowles is the hiring of Carlos Sainz for the 2025 season. A transfer coup that surprised many fans. The arrival of the Spaniard represents not only a strengthening of the team from a technical point of view, but also a clear signal of the direction that Williams intends to take. Vowles explained the strategic importance of this signing, highlighting how Sainz can act as a catalyst for a wider transformation within the team.
“Carlos is a highly experienced and talented driver, but what makes him truly special is his ability to contribute to the growth of a team,” said Williams team principal James Vowles. “His arrival will not only improve our performance on the track, but will also have a positive impact off the track, attracting new sponsors and investments that will allow us to accelerate our development programme.”
“The new regulations will offer all teams an opportunity to start from scratch, and we want to be ready to make the most of it. If we can put all the pieces of the puzzle together, I'm sure we can get back to fighting for the top positions. And with a driver like Sainz at our side, our chances of success increase significantly.”

Vowles described Sainz as Williams' "secret weapon" for the future, a driver capable of bringing not only speed and consistency, but also a winning mentality. “When we started talking to Carlos, it was immediately clear that he shared our long-term vision,” Vowles explained. “He knows that 2025 will be a year of transition, but he also knows that we are building something big for 2026 and beyond. This kind of commitment and faith in the project is exactly what we need right now.”
Sainz's arrival has already started to produce positive effects. Vowles revealed that several negotiations with potential sponsors, which have been ongoing for months, have accelerated thanks to the announcement of the Spanish driver's hiring. “Carlos's name carries with it a credibility and appeal that few other drivers can boast,” Vowles emphasized. “Sponsors see him not only as a great driver, but also as an ideal ambassador for their brand. This allows us to attract investments that will be fundamental to support our growth plan.”
