According to what the British site reports The Race, la Formula 1 is considering the proposal of an entire Sprint weekend dedicated to young drivers, to be played at the end of the championship. This special event, which could see the light in 2025, plans to take advantage of the slot currently dedicated to the young driver test held in Abu Dhabi after the end of each season. The idea is to offer a more structured and competitive platform for emerging motorsport talents who would not however feel the weight of a real championship.
The sprint weekend format dedicated to young drivers
The Sprint weekend would include practice, qualifying and a race Sprint, similar to the format introduced in the Circus in 2021. The event would represent a unique opportunity for young drivers, allowing them to demonstrate their talent in conditions almost identical to those of a traditional Grand Prix. However, there are various organizational and regulatory hurdles to overcome before the event can become a reality.
A crucial point will be deciding which drivers will be able to participate. Currently, the rule of a maximum of two GPs held in F1 could be adopted, similar to that used for FP1 sessions during the season. This would already exclude Oliver Bearman, who will debut with Haas as an official driver in 2025. Furthermore, it will be necessary to address the limitations imposed by the budget cap and the constraints on the use of power units and other mechanical components, which are strictly regulated during the year. Overcoming these barriers will require unanimous consensus between the teams and the parties involved. Another aspect to deal with concerns the management of TV rights.
Who would be the potential participants?
According to The Race, the Sprint for young drivers has already received initial support from interested parties. The proposal requires participating pilots to hold an international A license with a certain number of superlicence points, ensuring an adequate and qualified pool of pilots.

For a hypothetical edition of this event in 2024, some young drivers who could participate, divided by team are the following: Isack Hadjar, Arvid Lindblad, Ayumu Iwasa for Red Bull or Racing Bulls; Kimi Antonelli – should he not enter F1 in 2025, and Frederik Vesti for Mercedes; for Ferrari there would instead be Robert Shwarztman and Dino Beganovic. Pato O'Ward, Gabriel Bortoleto, Ryo Hirakawa would be the most likely names at McLaren. Aston Martin can instead count on Felipe Drugovich and Jak Crawford. In Alpine at the moment there are Jack Doohan, Victor Martins, Kush Maini. In Williams Franco Colapinto, Zak O'Sullivan and Luke Browning. To conclude, Sauber could count on Theo Pourchaire and Zane Maloney, Haas on Pietro Fittipaldi. Further names mentioned by The Race include Paul Aron, Alex Palou and Colton Herta.
If realised, this idea could offer a valuable platform for emerging talent, whilst providing racing teams with the opportunity to test and evaluate potential new champions in a highly competitive environment. We just have to wait to find out if this idea will ever really see the light.
