Once again in pole position Max Verstappen, that in 1:15.915 he recorded the fastest qualifying time for the Australian GP. The Dutchman pulls a rabbit out of the hat considering the difficulties encountered during free practice.
Verstappen qualifying with an unexpected result
With the 35th pole position of his career - and the third in a row - Verstappen will start ahead of everyone in Australia too. Unexpected result after the Dutchman's RB20, after contact with the curb in the FP1, the PU has been replaced. Therefore synonymous with a weekend that was not perfect until qualifying for Red Bull.
Even if in Q1 and Q2 Verstappen suffered from understeer in the slower corners, the potential of the RB20 was only unlocked at the end with the latest changes that have allowed it to find a better balance.
To the microphones of sky sports f1, Max Verstappen said:
Pole wasn't so expected this time, but I'm very satisfied with this Q3. Both laps went very well, I really enjoyed it. The weekend was difficult, but in the end we made it and I'm very satisfied.
Australian GP: after qualifying, it's an unknown for Verstappen
In the race, however, it will be a completely different story. Much more than in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, in fact, Max Verstappen expect some serious competition in Melbourne on Sunday from Ferrari, who also seems to have the tires well under control so far.
The race will be very strategic, Ferraris seem to be very fast on long runs. There's a question mark for tomorrow, but that makes things even funnier
It was a little more difficult to find a good balance in the car, even though they weren't that far from the red. Furthermore, according to Verstappen, it will still be quite tough with the softer compounds this year underlining how tomorrow's race could be dictated by tire management. Strategies will be even more fundamental given the close teams.
Tomorrow they will find out if the work done at Red Bull will be sufficient in the race.
