At the beginning of the season Adrian Newey admitted that he hadn't dared much with the RB20. A proclamation which, however, was immediately contradicted by the results on the track. Red Bull already boasts 3 doubles in 4 events. In Suzuka, the first updates arrived and there was a great show of strength from the Austrian team, which confirmed itself with both Verstappen and Perez. Red Bull seems more united than ever, even after the turbulence within the team linked to the Horner case. The biggest threat for the team concerned a possible rift between Horner-Verstappen/Marko and Adrian Newey himself, in doubt about whether or not to leave Red Bull. The engineer has returned to speak about these rumors, also linked to teams of the caliber of Ferrari e Aston Martin.
Adrian Newey: “I haven't planned my future”
The destinies of Red Bull and Adrian Newey, who already boasted world titles with Williams and McLaren, crossed in 2006, the year of his debut alongside Christian Horner. The designer, with his often visionary ideas, has always tried to take Formula 1 cars to the extreme as much as possible. There were two of the most prosperous periods at Red Bull. The first winning cycle with Sebastian Vettel in 2010 and to follow. The second with Max Verstappen. Red Bull was the first to demonstrate that it had fully captured the spirit of the new technical cycle with the return to ground effect single-seaters. An area that is not new to the designer who gained experience with this type of car in the 80s. This experience has allowed Red Bull not to particularly suffer from the change in regulation, as happened for example to Mercedes.
In 2024, Adrian Newey surprised everyone again by bringing a single-seater onto the track that is very different from the RB19, a car that won 21 out of the 22 events on the calendar. Taking the project to an even more extreme level, finding confirmation already from the first stage in Bahrain. At the same time, Red Bull had to deal with an internal crisis that undermined the stability of the team and led to rumors about the possible departure of Adrian Newey. In an interview a RacingNews365 Newey talked about his future and the path that led him to win, and have so much fun.
“Ever since I was 10-12 years old, I had the dream of becoming a designer. I only managed to get into racing after graduation. And I had a great time and continue to have fun." Newey is a little more cryptic about the future. The choice to stay or leave, or even to withdraw, depends on two things: “If I continue to enjoy myself and the team wants me, I will continue for the moment. We'll see about the future: I don't tend to plan too far in advance."
