McLaren's dominance is confirmed in the free tests and in qualifying for the Hungarian GP, with the team ready to fight for a double in tomorrow's race. Lando Norris will start from pole position with a time of 1'15"227, followed by his teammate, Oscar Piastri. Max Verstappen closes the top 3, with a Red Bull that has shown signs of difficulty this weekend.
Q1: Pérez out again, risk of replacement increasingly high
While waiting for the rain, on slick tyres, Mexican Sergio Pérez lost control of his Red Bull, causing a red flag which interrupted the session. A dramatic moment in Pérez's career, which puts his position in the Milton Keynes team in serious difficulty, with rumors speaking of a possible replacement between Lawson, Tsunoda or Ricciardo already after Spa. Replacing Pérez could not only upset this season, but also the driver market for 2025, with Carlos Sainz still available. Another twist was the elimination of George Russell, out of Q2 together with Zhou Guanyu, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly.
Q2: Risk for Lewis Hamilton
Only ten thousandths saved the British driver and winner at Silverstone, Lewis Hamilton, from elimination in Q2. Both Ferrari drivers qualified for Q3, but with a difference in feeling with the car between Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, with the latter appearing to have more difficulty driving than his teammate. The following remain out of Q3 of qualifying for the Hungarian GP: Nico Hulkenberg, Valtteri Bottas, Alexander Albon, Logan Sargeant and Kevin Magnussen.
Q3: Tsunoda accident and pole for Lando Norris
Two minutes from the end of the session, Yuki Tsunoda lost control of his car, causing significant damage to the car and the second red flag of the day. Lando Norris secured pole position, followed by his teammate, Oscar Piastri, ensuring an all-McLaren front row for tomorrow's race. The team is now determined to realize this opportunity with a victory.
