Charles Leclerc consolidates his dominance on the Baku street circuit, ahead of Oscar Piastri and Carlos Sainz. Lando Norris, after a disappointing Q1, faces a difficult race to recover ground in the title fight.
Charles Leclerc confirms his dominance in qualifying for the Baku GP, taking his fourth consecutive pole position on this circuit and 26th in his career, with a time of 1'41.365. Oscar Piastri will start from second position, while Carlos Sainz will line up in third position on tomorrow's starting grid.
Q1: Surprise in McLaren, Norris OUT
The British driver needed the final timed lap to avoid elimination, but in the third sector he encountered a yellow flag that, combined with an error, prevented him from completing the lap, relegating him to 17th place for tomorrow's race. This situation makes his fight for the world championship title (WDC) even more difficult, making it crucial to maximize points together with Piastri in tomorrow's race, to contain the gap to Red Bull and, above all, avoid the risk of Ferrari closing in on the fight for the constructors' title. Along with Norris, the following were eliminated in Q1: Ricciardo, Bottas, Zhou and Ocon.
Q2: Colapinto qualifies for Q3
In the debut of both rookies on the Baku circuit, Ollie Bearman was eliminated in Q2 along with his teammate Nico Hulkenberg, but recorded a faster time than the German driver. The surprise of these qualifying sessions comes from Williams, and in particular from Franco Colapinto, who qualified sixth for Q3. The eliminations in Q2 are completed by: Tsunoda, Gasly and Stroll.
Q3: Possible unsafe release for Albon, Leclerc on pole
For the fourth consecutive time in qualifying for the Baku GP, Leclerc once again takes pole position. Completing the top three for tomorrow's race are Oscar Piastri in second and Carlos Sainz, with his Ferrari, in third. At the end of the session, Williams will be under investigation for a possible unsafe release, having forgotten the fan attached to the car of Alexander Albon, who qualified tenth.
