Max Verstappen wins the Spanish GP, right here in Barcelona where he achieved his very first career victory in 2016. Not a simple walk, like the ones he had accustomed us to last year. Until the last lap the three-time world champion had to watch his back from the attacking McLaren Lando Norris.
Max Verstappen still king: his statements after the victory in the Spanish GP
Not the easiest victory today for Max Verstappen. After challenging Lando at the start Norris, also placing the front right slightly on the grass, saw himself slipping away from George Russell's Mercedes. Already on the second lap, however, the Dutchman from Red Bull he took the lead at the Spanish GP, putting an important distance between himself and the rest of the group. In his post-race statements Max Verstappen underlined how the first phase of the race was decisive for his victory.

«At the start I did a bit of rally on the grass and I lost momentum – explained Max Verstappen after the race in Spain. Then I braked late and he passed Russell. The race was decided in Departure time, I took the lead on the second lap and created a buffer, a gap. But Lando was faster and we played defense. Even in terms of degradation, McLaren was better than us. But we did everything well and played with one rather aggressive strategy which has borne fruit. We came quite close but we are very happy to have won again."
