According to what was anticipated by Motorsport.com Yet another innovation could arrive in Formula 1 in 2025. In fact, this week the teams will discuss with F1 the possibility of introducing a new points allocation system, which could be applied as early as 2025. At the moment in the standings, after the weekend in China there are always three teams with 0 points. Alpine, Williams, Stake F1. While Haas and Racing Bulls have managed to reach the top 10 on some occasions.
Points for the first 12 drivers, the idea will be presented to the F1 Commission
Scoring in F1 has changed four times over the years until it reached the structure we know today. Introduced in 2010, the current structure awards points to the top 10 finishers. Although it is more inclusive than the rankings of several years ago in which only the top 6 finished with points, the smaller teams are reportedly pushing to change the points award system and increase this number from 10 to 12. Which would also make the battles in the lower areas of the ranking more exciting.
The idea will be discussed between the team and the FIA at the next F1 Commission in Geneva. The proposed idea is that the points are therefore distributed to the top 12 drivers, rather than the top 10. However, without wanting to completely revolutionize the structure and burden the top teams considering that they are taxed based on the points collected over the course of the season, to come only the scores for positions 8 to 12 would be changed.
Even if there is no unanimous response to the proposal, only 6 of the current 10 teams need to back it for approval.
Here is how the assignment of points would therefore change with the system that will be discussed. The top 7 classified would receive, as now, 25, 18, 15, 12, 10, 8, 6 points respectively. From P8 these points would instead be awarded: 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 up to P12.
