This weekend, Formula 1 makes its long-awaited return to the Netherlands after the summer break, but the discussions in the paddock are not just about the action on the track. Recent news reported by The Telegraph indicate that Toto Wolff and Mercedes have definitively ruled out Max Verstappen as an option for 2025, despite speculation that it was potentially in silver. However, Verstappen could remain an option for 2026 should Red Bull's performance continue to decline. Meanwhile, Mercedes seems ready to bet on a new talent: Andrea Kimi Antonelli, whose arrival could be announced as early as next week in Monza.
Speculation about Verstappen's movements
For months, rumors of a possible move by Max Verstappen from Red Bull to Mercedes have dominated the Formula 1 landscape. If initially a transfer of the Dutch champion seemed unthinkable, the situation has begun to change in the last few races. Red Bull, which until recently dominated unchallenged, has started to show signs of slowing down, allowing its rivals to catch up. The difficulties of the Austrian team have reignited speculation about a possible farewell for Verstappen, considering that Mercedes was regaining its competitiveness.
In this context, the possibility that Verstappen could seek new challenges in a different team started to seem more plausible. Toto Wolff has repeatedly reiterated his desire to bring the three-time World Champion to Brackley, but the maneuver immediately seemed more complicated than expected. After waiting a long time, however, now it's time to get serious, there are only 10 races to go and Mercedes must quickly close the drivers chapter to dedicate themselves 100% to the single-seater. Precisely for this reason Mercedes and Toto Wolff had to reiterate that the Verstappen option will not be pursued in 2025. Despite the hypotheses fueled by Red Bull's problems, Max is therefore destined to remain with the Austrian team at least for the foreseeable future.

The future of Mercedes: Antonelli in Pole Position
With the confirmation that Verstappen will not be an option for 2025, Mercedes appear to have already turned the page, focusing on the future. The most obvious choice seems to be the arrival of Andrea Kimi Antonelli, the young Italian talent who is shining in the minor categories. The announcement of his entry into Formula 1 with Mercedes could take place as early as next week during the Monza Grand Prix.
Antonelli's arrival could mark a new era for Mercedes, which after a period of difficulty has shown signs of recovery, winning three of the last four races. This choice seems to be a clear signal of the German team's desire to invest in young talents, rather than focusing on established drivers like Verstappen. The decision to give up on the idea of Verstappen for 2025 may have been difficult, but it is now clear that Mercedes has decided to look forward, betting on Antonelli as a future top driver.
