Oscar Piastri did not mince his words in commenting on the recent rumours regarding the system of Red Bull to regulate the set-up of the cars in parc fermé that emerged in the pre-weekend in Austin. During the press conference of the United States Grand Prix, the young McLaren driver was harsh on the Austrian team's admission, calling it a potential breach of the rules that could have serious consequences.
Piastri condemns the possible violation
The topic of the alleged setup adjustment system on Red Bull’s RB20 has shaken the paddock. Piastri, speaking about the matter, was very direct: “If it turns out that this device was actually used, we would not be talking about a simple grey area, but a clear violation of the rules. It is a very serious problem.” The Australian driver stressed that the issue should not be underestimated, given the relevance that such a system could have on the championship.
According to Piastri, the FIA was right to intervene and clarify the rules, but the Australian insisted that full transparency was necessary to ensure the integrity of the competition: “It's not just about respecting the rules, but also about making sure everyone is playing on a level playing field.”
Norris's opinion on the matter
Teammate Lando Norris also offered his take on the matter. While keeping a more measured tone, Norris expressed concern about the possible impact the Red Bull system may have had on the championship: “If it has provided an advantage, it may have affected the results. But I don’t think they’ve been victorious solely because of this device.” Norris added that the FIA’s crackdown on testing is a necessary measure to ensure compliance with the rules.
Piastri and his role in McLaren
In parallel, Piastri also addressed another important issue, namely the perception of his role at McLaren. Max Verstappen recently stated that the Australian should never accept being Norris’ second in command, praising his talent. Piastri responded humbly, reiterating that his goal is to help the team achieve the maximum: “I don’t see myself as a number two. If I deserve a win or a good result, I will work to get it. My focus is on delivering results for the team.”
The Australian stressed that the internal rivalry with Norris is a motivating challenge, but he does not intend to sacrifice his personal ambitions for the good of the team.
McLaren's momentum heading into season finale
With six races remaining, the mood at McLaren is very positive. After a significant break for the team, both Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris say they are ready to take advantage of the remaining opportunities starting in Austin. “We have incredible momentum and we need to continue on this path,” said Piastri, showing great confidence in the team’s progress. McLaren is in a strong position to challenge for the constructors’ title and, despite the gap, both Norris and Piastri are aiming to challenge Verstappen in the fight for the drivers’ title.
