McLaren unexpectedly finds itself fighting for the world title thanks to a surprising leap in quality of the MCL38. However, this technical success has highlighted new challenges for the Woking team, particularly in the management of its two drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. At the center of the debate are the “Papaya Rules”, an internal regulation that allows drivers to challenge each other on the track without making contact. These rules, designed to avoid accidents between teammates, have come under fire after the Monza Grand Prix, where McLaren’s strategy favored Ferrari’s victory. To respond to the controversy, Andrea Stella, Team Principal of McLaren, has announced a significant change: for the last eight races of the season, the team will give greater support to Norris and will try to avoid the “Papaya Rules”.
McLaren: A return to the limelight and the difficulties of the title fight
The 2024 season saw McLaren take an incredible step forward with the MCL38, a car that allowed the Woking team to return to competing at the top of Formula 1. The improved performance rekindled hopes for the world title, but also exposed new complexities, especially in the internal management between Norris and Piastri.
The Papaya Rules, introduced to maintain a healthy rivalry between the two drivers without compromising the team's results, have attracted criticism since the Monza Grand Prix. In that race, the limitations imposed by the internal rules prevented the McLaren drivers from fighting freely, allowing Ferrari to exploit the situation and win the race with an impeccable strategy. Many have accused McLaren of giving too much of an advantage to their rivals, raising questions about the effectiveness of the Papaya Rules in such a tight season.
Stella: “More support for Norris, without the 'Papaya Rules'”
In response to the criticism, Andrea Stella said the team's approach needed to be reviewed. “It is clear that we need to make some reflections on the 'Papaya Rules'. The aim is to better support our drivers, without creating a tactical disadvantage against our opponents. For this reason, in the next eight races, we will give more support to Norris, who is currently our best-placed driver in the title race,” explained Stella.
However, Stella ruled out the idea of officially naming a first driver, maintaining a fair approach within the team. “We don’t want to compromise Oscar’s growth. Balance is essential, but we also need to be realistic and understand who has the best chance of fighting for the title,” added the Team Principal.
This new strategy could be a turning point for McLaren, who will look to maximize their potential and consolidate their position in the championship fight in the final eight races. It will be interesting to see how this change affects the dynamic between Norris and Piastri, and whether McLaren can achieve the results they hope for.
