Since August 1st the former Ferrari team principal, Mattia binotto, officially took office as head of operations and technical development of the Hinwil team. He also said about this Charles Leclerc, which he believes binotto a important resource for Audi's future in Formula 1.
Leclerc on Binotto: “He is an important resource for Audi”
THEannouncement of the return of Mattia Binotto arrived in the Circus in recent weeks. The Italian of Swiss origin is back operating with Sauber and will have the task of developing the power units and single-seaters that will debut in 2026. The team, which will become Audi in two seasons, appears to be a challenge rather ambitious for the former Cavallino team principal.
binotto constitutes one important resource for Audi's project, a thought also confirmed by Charles Leclerc in the interview given to Motorsport Week. The Monegasque, despite the ups and downs that have punctuated the two's coexistence at Ferrari, did nothing but sing the praises of the engineer from Reggio Emilia.
"I think Mattia knows Swiss culture very well having lived there a lot, and this will do him good. He can also leverage past experience in a team like Ferrari to benefit from it”. Leclerc then continued by saying: “There are definitely a lot of things it can bring to a team like Sauber thanks to what his past experience has taught him".
Intricate challenge for the former Ferrari team principal
I 28 years of experience in the Maranello team – of which the last 4 are team principals – constitute a fundamental wealth of experience and necessary to best face the Audi challenge that lies ahead for Andreas Seidl's heir. The debut of the house with the four rings in Formula 1 is a highly anticipated event, so much so that the Circus itself has come up against the regulations on engines operational from 2026.
Le expectations are therefore high, despite the basis of the project, Sauber, is in difficulty this season. There is still a year left before the definitive move to Audi - a useful but also necessary margin for improvements - but, if in 2026 not should the desired results be achieved, fault would fall back up Mattia binotto, who however inherited the project already in progress.
