Carlos Sainz, interviewed by Passion formula on the occasion of GP di Silverstone 2023, analyzes his previous race. And he reveals his hopes a year after its premiere (and for now only) career victory...
Carlos Sainz: “I'm riding better this year”
In the interview held by Carlo Platella, correspondent for Formula Passion, Carlos Sainz commented on the problems encountered in the last race. In the Austrian GP: “Did we talk? I didn't ask to overtake Charles, I let the team know how I felt very comfortable driving, I had the fresh tires and under control. I wanted them to know, but then the strategy was clear that we had on track, which was to move forward and open the gap with Mercedes, and I did so. On the pit stop I saw that for my race I wasted a lot of time. We also had two slow pit stops which didn't help."

Carlos Sainz continues: “I think we both had a stop of over four seconds, and I lost an extra four seconds. For that at the moment i was frustrated and I thought it would be better if we did something different. The tires were in good condition and even analyzing them after the race the tires were very fresh. They are race situations, in one GP something better happens and in another something worse. Certainly I'm riding better this year compared to last year, I feel better with the car and even stronger. Last year I got my first Formula 1 win here, which is always special. I hope we can continue to develop in order to fight for podiums and victories".
Silverstone, or the update testbed
This weekend Silverstone will represent for the Ferrari a nice testbed in order to test the new updates. Carlos Sainz declared in this regard: “I think there is a need for a circuit like Silverstone. We struggled a lot with the wind, I think in Miami and Baku. I think we need more races to evaluate our progress related to the development package, but I can say that the car was better in Austria both on the flying lap and in the race. It must be said that we were fast in Austria also in 2022, therefore I'm always very cautious, I'll let the season play out so I can analyze the progress."

"However, I am very proud of how the team reacted. In Barcelona we tried many things on the car which allowed me to better understand our weak points and how to deal with them. They gave us a clear direction on how to develop, and now that choice is paying off.” Therefore he concluded the interview with caution: “We are on the right path, I'm sure. I want to believe that we have turned a corner, but other test benches are needed, for example a weekend on a windy track like Silverstone, even if we can struggle a little more in these conditions".
