Carlos Sainz unfortunately does not finish the race of the 2024 Baku GP. His last lap was animated by an overtaking on Sergio Perez to take third position. Overtaking was initially successful but then he collided with the latter and ended up, together with the number 11, in the wall.
Carlos Sainz: Baku is a bitter taste in the mouth
Carlos Sainz, immediately after the race, comments on the incident explaining his point of view on what happened. Contact was unavoidable for the Ferrari driver, unlike Sergio Perez, who has now completely passed by the Ferrari driver.
Between those who say it was a gamble to also overtake his teammate in second place, and those who say it's Perez's fault, here are his words:
"First of all I'm happy that Checo and I are okay. Unfortunately after passing Checo at turn 1 and after fighting with Charles at turn 2 there was an unexpected contact and honestly I still don't understand how it could have happened."
"I wasn't making any irregular or risky maneuver on Checo. We collided and that was the end. I'm not sure [of the outcome of the investigation, ed.], I'm not one who likes to blame others and analyze too much, not before seeing the stewards. I know I didn't do anything dangerous and nothing bad. We'll see what the FIA decides." is the comment of the Madrid native on the contact with Perez that led to his retirement on lap 51. Verdict that has arrived and that the FIA filed as a racing incident.
Carlos Sainz did not comment further on the matter, and then spoke about the race pace not being optimal, especially due to the white tyres. Finding the same problem as the stablemate.
In response, we also report the words of the Mexican driver: «It is really a shame that it happened. I am lost for words because it cost a lot of points, a disaster for the championship. We definitely have much more on the table this weekend. In my opinion, Carlos moved too fast to follow Charles' tow, it was the wrong moment that led to a huge accident.»
