Fernando Alonso has never lost his hunger for victory, and at 43 he still has an ambitious goal: to win his third Formula 1 world title in the next two or three years. At a recent event organised by Aston Martin partner Cognizant, Alonso said his top priority is to return to winning the world championship, despite the challenges that come with his age and in a growing team. “In the next two or three years I want to win the third world title. That is my first and only priority,” said the Spanish driver.
The challenge with Aston Martin and the arrival of Adrian Newey
Alonso, already two-time world champion with Renault in 2005 and 2006, is aware that time is running out, but his determination does not waver. The arrival of Adrian Newey, one of the most brilliant technicians in F1 history, is seen as a potential turning point for Aston Martin. However, Alonso knows that patience will be needed before Newey’s work bears concrete fruit. “I would like to say that he will be able to influence the 2025 car, but honestly I don’t think so. The real impact of Newey will probably be seen in 2026, with the change in regulations,” Alonso explained.
Aston Martin is taking important steps, such as building a new wind tunnel and doubling the number of staff at the factory. “We have everything we need to win our first race and hopefully we can fight for the championship in the future. I know it will take time, but I am working hard towards this goal,” added Alonso, showing great confidence in the team’s long-term project.
Time is running out, but the desire to win remains
Despite his advanced age for an elite athlete, Alonso continues to prove that he is one of the most competitive drivers on the grid. The eight podiums obtained in the 2023 season confirm that the two-time champion is still capable of fighting at the highest level. Although his last success dates back to 2013, Alonso has not lost hope of climbing to the top step of the podium again and fighting for the much-desired third title.
Asked if Newey’s arrival could deliver a long-awaited 33rd career win and potentially a third world championship, Alonso was realistic: “Let’s see. We can’t predict the future, but I think there will be good things for the team in the next few months.”
An uncertain future, but full of ambitions
Alonso knows that his Formula 1 career will not continue for much longer, but that does not discourage him. On the contrary, he is motivated to leave one last indelible mark on the history of F1. His primary goal remains the conquest of the third world title, but he is already looking to the future, declaring that his next challenge will be the Dakar Rally. “If I could win it, it would be a great personal satisfaction.”
With the arrival of Adrian Newey and a team that is growing rapidly, Alonso is confident he still has a chance for a third world title. “We have the right structures and people to win. Now it’s just a matter of patience and working hard,” concluded the Spaniard, suggesting that, despite his age, he has no intention of giving up.
