With three races to go in the season, Formula 1 is once again faced with a change in race direction: Niels Wittich has submitted his resignation, forcing the FIA to take action naming Rui Marques including new race director. A decision that comes as a surprise, but which reflects the difficulties of the top division in finding stable and competent leadership.
An unexpected farewell
The news of Niels Wittich's departure came as a bolt from the blue, but for many in the paddock it wasn't entirely surprising. Since his arrival in 2022, Wittich has faced constant criticism for his controversial handling of certain situations on the track. Appointed as successor to Michael Massi After the chaotic finale of Abu Dhabi 2021, Wittich had initially shared the role with Eduardo Freitas. However, questionable choices and a lack of consistency in decisions soon led to frustration among teams and drivers.
During the Austin Grand Prix, the Safety Car incredibly failed to intercept the race leader, generating confusion and altering the outcome of the race. Similar episodes were repeated at the Chinese Grand Prix, when the slow management of a crashed car left everyone perplexed. This fueled doubts about Wittich's competence, culminating today in his official resignation.
The official press release from the FIA
Below is the full text of the press release issued by the FIA:
“The FIA can confirm that Niels Wittich has resigned as Formula 1 Race Director to pursue new opportunities. Niels fulfilled his many responsibilities as Race Director with professionalism and dedication. We thank him for his commitment and wish him all the best for the future.
Rui Marques will take up the role of Race Director from the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Rui brings a wealth of experience, having previously served as a track marshal, scrutineer, national and international steward, deputy race director and race director in various championships. Most recently, he served as a Formula 2 and Formula 3 race director.”
An uncertain future for race management
With Wittich's departure, the FIA is once again faced with a change at the top, highlighting the difficulty in finding a solid leader after the passing of Charlie Whiting. The lack of consistency in decisions and often flawed procedures have undermined the credibility of the race direction, leaving fans increasingly skeptical about the regularity of the championship.
Rui Marques, previously a race director in Formula 2 and Formula 3, has been appointed as the new race director starting from the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Marques brings with him a significant amount of experience, having held key roles such as track marshal and international steward. However, the pressure of Formula 1 represents a very different challenge to the smaller championships. The FIA hopes that Marques can restore order and authority, qualities that have been lacking in recent years. However, it remains to be seen whether he will be able to establish himself as a reference figure, capable of making firm decisions without being influenced by external pressures from Liberty Media and the demands of television.
