The world of Formula 1 is shaken by a new and unexpected turning point. The United States Department of Justice has indeed opened an antitrust investigation into Liberty Media, following the controversial decision to exclude the Andretti Global team from the world championship. An affair which, already at the center of heated discussions, now takes on legal contours and potentially has a great impact for the entire F1 Circus.
The Andretti Case: a bitter battle to enter F1
After obtaining the approval of FIA last year, Andretti looked poised for a 2025 debut. Also strong in a partnership with General Motors which would have brought the prestigious Cadillac brand into the Circus. However, despite the endorsement of the FIA, last January Andretti's proposal was rejected by Liberty Media and the current Formula 1 teams, sparking a heated debate.
The decision has raised numerous controversies, not only in the racing world, but also in the political sphere. US deputies and senators have sided with the Andretti family. The allegations raised spoke of a violation of antitrust laws. Precisely in response to this pressure, the Department of Justice decided to open an investigation to clarify the criteria adopted by Liberty Media in managing Andretti's entry request.

Greg Maffei's statements: Liberty Media's defense
In this context of growing tension, Greg Maffei, president and CEO of Liberty Media, released a statement confirming the investigation, and saying he intends to cooperate fully with the authorities. “There is an ongoing Department of Justice investigation and we intend to cooperate fully, providing all requested information,” Maffei said. “We believe that our decision and that of F1 complied with all antitrust laws Americans and we have explained in detail the reasons for the rejection of the application previously".
Liberty Media's defense is therefore based on reasons already explained in the past. Motivations that concern in particular concerns about the competitiveness and economic sustainability of the new team. However, Maffei's words certainly did not calm the controversy. Especially in light of what was declared by Mario Andretti, who accused Maffei himself of having personally and directly opposed the entry of Andretti Global into Formula 1.
An uncertain future for F1 and Andretti
The matter is far from over and the Justice Department's investigation could lead to significant consequences. If irregularities are found in the handling of Andretti's request, the legal and commercial implications for Liberty Media and for Formula 1 as a whole could be enormous. This would open up scenarios ranging from the review of the decisions made up to possible sanctions against the managers involved.
Meanwhile, Michael Andretti doesn't seem willing to throw in the towel.
