The news that has recently been circulating in the paddock is sensational. As reported by Roberto Chinchero for Motorsport.com it seems that Carlos Sainz's future will not be linked to that of Audi / Sauber, much less of Mercedes or Red Bull but rather of Williams. The decision is not yet official but what emerges from Chinchero's story is that the Spaniard's management is taking steps to close a two-year agreement with the Grove team. If Williams' interest in the Spaniard was already known, the opposite is surprising. It is true that there were not many alternatives for Sainz, and at the basis of this choice there is in fact a very important element, namely that in 2026, everyone will start from scratch. However, let's see in detail what the arrival of Carlos Sainz in Williams would entail.
Sainz, between Audi and Williams the preference goes to the English team
“I will put all options on the table and make the right decision. As soon as all aspects are clarified, the decision will be made quickly.” With these words Carlos Sainz recently commented on the questions regarding his future, now that he is looking for a seat for 2025.
According to Roberto Chinchero, Sainz would have expressed a preference, putting Audi's proposal aside for the moment, instead carefully evaluating the Williams option, "preferring a less politically charged environment and aware that new opportunities will open up in the top teams at the end of 2026“. A scenario that also derives from the fact that, at least for 2025, the doors of Mercedes and Red Bull are closed to Sainz, excluding him from the seats of the top teams. Currently, options remaining on the market include Alpine, Haas, Williams and Sauber.

Considering next season, a possible link with Williams does not necessarily represent an inferior choice compared to Sauber. Indeed, following the current trend, the Williams package could prove more competitive in 2025, given the continuity of the development of existing single-seaters rather than new projects.
There is a lot of anticipation for 2026 and what it can offer and Mercedes is one of the most watched teams, especially for its Power Unit. Should the German team find itself with an excellent engine Williams could benefit enormously, as has happened in the past, with the switch to hybrid engines.
For Sainz, the best alternative could therefore be to stay with a team that can offer him stability while waiting for better offers.
