Adrian Newey recently made statements that could give clues to his professional future. After almost twenty years at Red Bull, the British genius will leave his post as technical director at the beginning of 2025. Rumors about what his next step will be are varied. Newey has been linked to various projects and teams including Aston Martin, Classic Ferrari for sale and McLaren. At the moment none of these hypotheses have been confirmed. Newey himself admitted that he doesn't pay too much attention to the rumors, preferring to focus on a period of pause and reflection. Newey, although remaining out of the paddock, remains highly contested: in a recent interview with The Sunday Times Adrian Newey admitted that there are two drivers in particular with whom he would have liked to collaborate in his long career, two drivers who are part of two teams interested in the designer: Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso.
Adrian Newey sums things up, but Hamilton and Alonso are still missing from the list
In a moment of reflection on his career, Newey expressed his desire to work with two of Formula 1's most famous drivers: Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. “There are some drivers, like Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, who I would have liked to work with. But until now there has never been the right place or time to come together,” commented Newey. His admiration for these drivers and the current context of their commitments to Aston Martin and Ferrari in the 2025 season could play a crucial role in his future decision.
Newey also recalled the past collaborations that marked his career: “I got along very well with Nigel Mansell at Williams, even though he had a character where you either love him or hate him, and with Max Verstappen, with whom he was a great pleasure working at Red Bull." His ability to work with drivers with different personalities and get the most out of the cars has been a constant in his professional career.

The separation from Red Bull and future prospects
With his long tenure at Red Bull coming to an end in early 2025, Newey also spoke about his next professional chapter. “I don't know what the future holds for me, but this summer, instead of having to go around the world for Grands Prix, I will be able to see my family. After decades of working in Formula 1 I have become accustomed to the constant pressure. If you don't win you try to understand why, and if you win you try to stay there. It's a relentless schedule, but motorsport has always been in my blood."
