A lot has changed since 2020 for Alexander Albon, when he was dumped by Red Bull Racing at a time when seat changes were the order of the day. And, according to what was reported by media such as Motorsport.com, Albon could return… in 2026.
Albon on the list of a hot seat in Red Bull
Among the various dynamics linked to the drivers market, the one that always holds sway concerns the seat at Red Bull Racing. In recent years Sergio Perez's place has always been one of the most sought after, with the Mexican risking being downgraded several times in favor of riders such as Liam Lawson and Daniel Ricciardo. With the latter starting below expectations, another name was added to the list: Alexander Albon.
A return that could take place in 2026, at the end of his contract with Williams. His current team, in fact, does not want to deprive itself early of a driver who has guaranteed important points in 2023. Despite this year not having started in the best way – his was the accident that caused the chassis to break in Australia starting a domino effect – Albon is the spearhead that the team is counting on to further release itself.
James Vowles doesn't want to make concessions in favor of anyone, especially not for someone driver who believes he can become world champion. George Russell found himself in the same situation in 2020, blocked by the three-year contract signed with Williams, resulting in his arrival at Mercedes being postponed for twelve months. And Red Bull doesn't want to make big expenses.
First experience in Red Bull
Seeing Albon's name linked to Red Bull obviously takes us back to 2019, the year of his debut in F1 with Toro Rosso.
After 12 Grands Prix – given Pierre Gasly's performance in Red Bull below the expectations of Helmut and Horner – Alex was promoted as Verstappen's teammate. Between the bad luck that often prevented him from scoring points and having to manage the pressure, confirmation had nevertheless arrived at the end of the season. In 2020 Albon scored half of Max's points, in a daring season due to the pandemic.
Let's remember, however, that if he, unlike others, was not downgraded, Helmut gave him different treatment. With Sergio Perez discarded at the end of the season, Red Bull wanted to grab the Mexican. An economic as well as sporting choice, with Checo who, in addition to experience, would have brought money and the trade of the drink to Mexico. The one who lost out, therefore, was Albon himself, who was given the sack at the end of the season, when the drivers' market was closed.
After being third driver in Red Bull, Williams was the opportunity to return among the starting drivers.
I return with maturity
With a contract until 2025 with Williams, Albon currently has one seat left. In Red Bull, although Verstappen's teammate is always in the balance every year, it seems we are moving towards a reconfirmation of Perez.
Although he is not at Max's level, he still guarantees points for the constructors' championship. This is what the champion team needs, which will wait until May to make the final decision.
Everything is therefore postponed to 2026.
Next year would be the Mexican's last chance. For Albon, possibly, the return to Red Bull would take place with greater maturity acquired over the years. In fact, Williams allowed him to gain confidence and grow without the pressure he had on his debut.
In addition to probable interest from the Thai boss Chalerm Yoovidhya, majority shareholder of the group, at Red Bull they are aware of the boy's talent.
Much depends on the evolution of the corporate situation, but Albon will always be looked after.
