Yesterday was very important to understand how the next Formula One seasons will be structured. Indeed, as we know, the F1 Commission met yesterday in London and drafted some innovations in view of the 2023 season and beyond.
Sustainability goal
In addition to the Sprint variant, on which there is still no certainty, the guidelines have also been drawn up for what concerns Pirelli tyres. In fact, to respond to the sustainability factor, the sets of tires available for each driver will go from 13 to 11. This option will be met in two Grands Prix next season. If the idea were to obtain the desired results, and therefore work well, then it will automatically enter the regulation of the 2024 season. Next year will therefore be a testing ground, also to understand how sustainable Formula One can become.
The new, possible, qualifications
A choice, the one dedicated to tyres, which was unanimously approved by the F1 Commission. However, this decision corresponds to a change in the regulation for the conduct of the qualifications. In fact, the following criterion will be reflected in the two Grand Prix trials: in Q1 there will be an obligation to use the hard tyres, in Q2 instead the medium tyres, while in Q3 it will be compulsory to use the soft tyre. A choice that initially didn't seem to convince all the teams, so much so that Pirelli had already tried to have the test run during this season, to allow it to be used as early as 2023. In the end, during the Imolese GP and the meeting yesterday, even the contrati teams accepted the offer. Also because, with the possibility of starting with a rehearsal, an about-face is by no means excluded.
