After a 2022 in which the Silverstone-based team finished the championship in seventh place, level on points with Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin launches in 2023 with a very different perspective. The team led by Lawrence Stroll, in fact, would have taken a path that would lead to a philosophy much more similar to Red Bull.
Deputy Technical Director, Eric Blandin, explained how the AMR22 had become one laboratory car, with a view to 2023. A step backwards in performance was immediately seen, with extreme difficulties in the first part of the season. The introduction of numerous updates has helped Aston Martin gain ground, thanks in part to a good run of points finishes. Also, the arrival of the new technical director Dan Fallows contributed to the change of philosophy, as Fallows had previously worked at Red Bull.
Precisely the latter, during the season, spoke of how the situation within the team had already changed since the beginning of the season, when the philosophy of the car had been identified as incorrect and a long job was needed for a more suitable conversion to the new regulation. Furthermore, Aston Martin had already adopted one similar philosophy to Red Bull from the Spanish Grand Prix, with the car extremely similar to that of Milton Keynes. From 2023, therefore, we should see a new concept from Aston Martin, much more similar in philosophy to the world champion car. The new technical choices should help in the management of ground clearance and stiffness, also considering the Technical Directive against porpoising.
Again Blandin explained how in the new car there are 90% new components, and 95% revised aerodynamic surfaces. In short, the new car for Fernando Alonso e Lance stroll already starts with a very specific intention: to launch the challenge to Alpine and McLaren.
